How to convert a bank statement PDF to CSV or Excel

6 min read · updated October 2026

A PDF statement is great for reading and terrible for accounting. This guide walks the four real ways to get transactions out of a statement and into a spreadsheet — including the catches nobody mentions until you hit them.

First: check if your bank exports CSV directly

Most banks — Chase included — let you download account activity as CSV, Excel, QBO, or OFX from online banking. If you own the account and the period you need is within the bank's download window, this is the fastest and cleanest route: no conversion, no errors. Chase's export lives under Download account activity on the account page.

The catch: the export window only reaches so far back, and you need the account owner's login. Bookkeepers receiving PDFs from clients, businesses with archived statements, and anyone doing historical cleanup usually cannot use it. That is the gap statement converters fill.

Second: use a statement-to-CSV converter

Converters extract transactions from the PDF and emit a spreadsheet file. They differ on two axes that matter far more than price:

Try it with your own statement

Chase statements are supported today; the first 10 transactions convert free, in your browser, with an editable preview before download.

Third: scanned statements need OCR — and honesty

If the PDF is a scan of paper (a photo of pages, no selectable text), text extraction cannot work — there is no text, only pixels. OCR tools attempt to read the image, and modern OCR is good but not bookkeeper-grade on financial figures: a misread digit is silent. If you must OCR a scan, reconcile every row against the paper original. If an electronic statement exists, always prefer it.

Fourth: manual entry, the underrated fallback

For fewer than ~20 transactions, typing them in yourself is often faster than validating any tool's output. Manual entry is only a mistake at scale.

A 4-point privacy checklist for any converter

CheckWhy it matters
Does the file upload to a server?A statement reveals your balance, counterparties, and account digits
Can you preview and edit rows?Extraction errors are normal; blind exports hide them
Is there an account requirement?Extra accounts mean extra places your email leaks from
Does the privacy policy match behavior?"Private" tools should say exactly what, if anything, is collected
